Thursday, June 26. 2008More birthdays and Anniversaries!
Life has been hectic onboard Promenade, i don't know where this week has gone! Yesterday was a huge day, after shopping at Foxys and a rather nice new jewellery stall we have found, we hit White Bay for the morning. We saw a day trip boat we haven't seen forever, the reason I particularly notice is because of.........
![]() ...... the cutey doggy! He is rather clever too, he can climb the boat ladder and everything! The group had a huge morning, swimming, kayaking and fitted Soggy Dollar and Ivans in too! Heading over to Norman, they had a monster card game, about 2 straight hours, here they are in action ![]() Tyler turned into a caped super hero, or may be he was cold ![]() Some took the opportunity to have a nap ![]() Richie had a minor medical emergency, he managed to stand on a bee and he is quite allergic to these things, so I had to do some fast nursing care, all worked well, barely a mark there today! He was a bit of a wusey about it all though! Here he is elevating ![]() We arrived late to Norman, about cocktail hour, some still managed a quick wake board before dinner ![]() and a good wipe out too ![]() It was a big game night, last night, by all accounts! Today was the go big day and this group definetly did that, we got straight onto the caves moorings before breakfast, so we were good to go straight after, this was snorkel number 1 and a quick seagull / fish feed too ![]() ![]() It was then a quick water sports before snorkel number 2 on Sea Horse Reef, no sea horse today but instead a huge big octopus ![]() ![]() How cool! Not only that but also a moray eel that i had never seen before that is rare ![]() It was a great dive and I never got to go and look for the sea horse, I did see a shrimp ![]() a turtle ![]() 2 sting rays ![]() and a spider crab ![]() After an afternoon cruising Willy T's and Pirates, it was snorkel number 3 at the Indians, cocktails and water sports till we had to stop due to insufficent lighting! Today is Tim and Karen's 26th Wedding anniversary, big congratulations and it is also nearly Bryan's birthday, 2 days to go, but he did get a candle in his brownie! Saving Beef Island, British Virgin Islands
I understand that Ocean River Institute has helped the VIEC (Virgin Islands Environmental Council) raise over 18,000 signatures from the BVI and around the world in support of Keeping Hans Creek on Beef Island exactly as it is! That is pretty impressive.
I also hear that the VIEC is having a meeting tonight to prepare how to present these to the Premiere! I hope to hear more on it tomorrow. This is an important item for the territory, and I am sure it took a tremendous amount of work from locals and others alike to collect the signatures. I understand that quite a few are from BVLanders, and that is almost a mini miracle getting the locals to sign things like this. ![]() This is a quote from Ocean River Institutes website on it. "VIEC is preparing to present three inch notebooks with 600 plus pages of testimony from more than 18,000 individuals in support of the Premier's efforts to renew the BVI tradition of careful development that maintains a pristine environment. People wrote from Road Town, Trellis Bay, Scrub Island, Virgin Gorda, and Anegada, west from the U.S. Virgin Islands to Rhoatan, beyond from the United States and Great Britain. At the Alaska Oceans Festival 275 people wrote from Anchorage; in Boston, 750 people wrote from EarthFest on the Esplanade. We see as vital the health of salt ponds, coastal mangrove lagoons, and coral reefs. Such places are tied not only to BVI's economic growth in ecotourism and related businesses, these places are tied to the health of our food and quality of life." 18,000 individual signatures and 600 plus pages of comments!! Yeeks!! That is pretty impressive.. What do they do? Put in in a wheel barrow and take it to the Administration Building? Must weigh a bit! .Between the economy looking the way it is, the lack of airplane seats down here, the price of fuel and the rumors abounding about IYG (who apparently owns 49 or some such % of the Beef Island Project, along with having bought up every other marina around in the BVI, USVI and Caribbean ) I am not sure I would be rushing ahead with a development down here. IYG has been fighting some rumors of financial difficulty at Yacht Haven Grande in St Thomas, You can see the downplay here but word on the street says that between the occupancy (or lack of) low sales on condo's and boats staying away from the high prices, that things are not rosy. IYP has spent money left and right over the last few years buying up marinas all over the world, and in our area including Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, Village Cay Marina, American Yacht Harbor, Yacht Haven, which is starting to smack of monopoly, and according to complaints from a lot of charter boats, the prices go up immediately. I think most of us in the charter fleet have problems with any who think that our main occupation down here is moving from marina to marina paying money (a lot of money) nightly to someone. We stopped using the marinas years ago as the cost benefit ratio just did not pan out. There is times they come in handy, but it will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Some of the comments from the "letter" to the Premiere (who ran for election based partly on relooking at these developments, so he is really the recipient of the letters that should have gone to the last government) are: "Dear Premier O'Neal, I have been a frequent visitor to BVI since 1992, often visiting every six months or more. Every time I visit I am disheartened by the increase in development, the increase in crime and traffic and pollution. I have mourned an erosion of the things which had made BVI so special, it's hospitality, trusting friendship, sweet air, starry skies unmarred by light pollution, the sound of it's tree frogs at night and not motorbikes. The fabric of what has made BVI so special is being lost daily. In the last year I have stayed at Long Bay Resort, Peter Island Resort, Brewer's Bay Campground, Mangrove Bay and Neptune's Treasure. My private undiscovered and undisturbed Great Harbor on Peter Island was developed between my August and February visits, the cruise ship visits seem to increase exponentially every six months. While on the hill above Mangrove Bay, my 5 year old son, Nicholas, said, as he over looked the lights of Tortola, "They better be careful Mommy because it it going to turn into St. Thomas and we will loss our special place and the people here will be said because they will have only money and nothing beautiful." This is from the innocence of a five year old. Please put some weight on the words out of the mouths of babe's in your consideration before further major development of Beef Island and the Grace that God has given BVI, it's bountiful gifts that need stewardship and protection. Thank you for your consideration. Karen Andrade, Esq., Southampton, MA US" "I have been to Beef Island, and it is one of the few truly unspoiled places on the planet. Please preserve it! Alan Binkow, Dayton, OH US " "As a land owner in Virgin Gorda since l974 the proposed further development of the BVI is most alarming. We are tampering with the environment to the detrement of future generations. The BVI contains a magical eco system and we tamper with it at our peril. It is imperative we mainain the ecosystem which has been entrusted to our care. sheila owen-smith, guildford GU50SS GB " "Trellis Bay is one of your great assets and should not be destroyed! john fritz wood, Trujillo Alto, PR US" "Dear Rt.Hon. O'Neal, I have visited the BVI's 5 yrs. ago and sailed with my husband and friends to nine of the islands, and we want to come back soon. Please don't destroy this beautiful place by another high rise hotel..It will spoil the habitat, reefs, etc. I am pleading to you, please don't. Cheryl Brackett, Norman OK US " "A good friend spent eight years living in the British Virgin Islands. He speaks often of their beauty. In fact, it was only yesterday we wondered at how much of it's treasures were protected. Today, I received this and will forward it to my friend that I know will be even more concerned than I in our hopes that everything possible is being done to preserve yet another of Earth's precious treasures. It worries me that we may be on the verge of discovering that we have not acted quickly enough to protect our delicate ecosystems. Thank-you for your efforts. R. Chris LaReau, Savannah, GA US " "I have been a regular visitor to St. John, USVI. The last time I was there, I was amazed and alarmed at the number of new buildings that were being built. Even though over half of the island is a National Park, people are building homes and businesses everywhere they can. The impact on the island is devastating. If you can preserve what you have on Beef Island, now is the time to take action before development destroys your ecosystem. Cindy McKee, Frankfort, KY, US" "As a golfer i can assure you we do not need to spoil this lovely island with another one please preserve this natural habitat. Tom Morrison, Warwick -- cv345xt GB " "This will be a short sighted economic catastrophe. Golf is already declining- golf courses in the Caribbean are already overbuilt and the infrastructure required to maintain a resort has long term costs. Besides, you will drive away the people who already make Tortola their resort of choice. James Hillman, Thompson, CT US" ![]() Wednesday, June 25. 2008Birthdays and birthday suits!
I got mailed a couple pictures from some guys who were on here a few weeks ago that were so cute! They have incorporated the bell system at home for meal times, in the absence of a bell they have cleverly come up with......
![]() They also live by the lake, the other night they had a turtle wandering around their back yard, looking to lay some eggs ![]() Great pictures! Anyhow, back to this trip, we have been busy, yesterday was karens birthday, we didn't get to go to Anegada for her birthday with this weather at the moment, which is where she really wanted to go, so we tried to make it extra special for her! We had breakfast mimosas, an incredible snorkel at Muskmelon and a hard core water sports morning, their was wake boarding, well Rich demonstrating ![]() Bryan giving it a good go ![]() There was predator ![]() The girls touched up their nails ![]() All this action, then we went to Monkey point for a quick pre lunch snorkel, on to Cane Garden for a quick visit and finally cocktails at Jost Van Dyke! We did Birthday cake for cocktail hour as we were off out for dinner, very yummy it was too ![]() As we pulled into Great Harbor there was a charter boat next to us, with a naked couple on the back with noodles, they waved heartily and went for a swim, they were then joined by a few more nudey people, made me blush, the girls felt the need to inspect a little closer ![]() It was then out for dinner and fine it was too, some ordered lobster, it was a big one ![]() Food was great, after dinner entertainment, these guys have a game called cowboy, ninja, bear, it is stone, paper, scissors but with actions, you start back to back, take 3 paces and pick your move, B was challenged to a match and got his butt kicked! It is very funny to watch! ![]() A final stop took us to Foxys, as Bryan sat down he got a friend, a cat just walked up to him, jumped on his knee and went to sleep! I wasn't happy as I am normally the animal person, I didn't get a look in! ![]() Tuesday, June 24. 2008Promenade offers new service options! Sleep aboard option the evening before charter!
This has been something that I have been mulling over for quite awhile, and I have some more things coming down the line that I am very excited about with Promenade, but they are not quite ready for human consumption yet!
I have had so many people tell me that they want to get off the plane and straight on the boat. Plus, in season, many hotels are full or looking for a three night minimum, not to mention the weird arrival times of airplanes. If, your arrival is after 9:00 PM at night, we can also arrange a tray of sandwiches or cheese and crackers, for a minimum price ( must be ordered in advance!) as the only thing that is going to be open for anyone who is hungry is the chicken van or the grocery store! Now, us who live on the island, love the late night chicken van, but also admit, it usually only follows after a greater amount of alcohol then you are likely to be served on your flights down to Tortola by American Airlines! This below is quoted from my website. On availability, Promenade is pleased to offer the following for your convenience. Upon arrival either by ferry or plane, you can taxi straight to the yacht in the marina. We offer you your beds for the night, access to the drinking water, coffee and tea, as well as full air conditioning as required. Besides a short talk about how the lights and heads work, we provide no services, and you can make your choice for your evening meal or breakfast at any of the restaurants on island, before beginning your charter at 11:00 AM! We hope that by offering this we help make your trip easier! Our flat rate is $800.00 (non commissionable, booked and paid in advance) ![]() We am happy to work with you on all aspects, our goal is to make your vacation as stress free as we possibly can. With the ever decreasing amount of luggage that you are allowed to bring on flights, why bother bringing SCUBA gear down with you? Ours is all NEW! The one exception to this is a mask and snorkel that you are comfortable with. Don't bother lugging shampoo, body wash etc. We have it all! Please understand that this DOES not include any other crew services other then what is mentioned above, as we are usually on a 24 hour turnaround and that is the only time we have available for emergency maintenance, or the crew going out themselves! We will limit the amount of these that we do, but it is one way that we can help! Monday, June 23. 2008Dodging the weather, having some fun!
We have done well today, we have avoided nearly every bit of rain, we have had a few spots, but nothing major! Although as I type tonight it is raining, lightning and thundering! We are all having seafood and wine with the blinds down, so who cares!
Our group have had another busy day, most headed into Bitter end for a day time visit, it did spot of rain on them on the way over!! Once back, we visited Levrick Bay, most headed in there too, ![]() On the way past mosquito we saw a flotilla all rafted up, made us miss our old job Kerry!! ![]() It was then on over to the Dogs for a lunch time snorkel and a dive for Bryan, who did the best job ever! Here he is all poised for action! ![]() As we pulled into Muskmelon Bay it was cocktail hour, a cocktail game had been mentioned so I figured it was a good time to Bushwaker them, they did well, we had a 6 way tie, I had to give it to 2 of them in the end, here they are showing off their prize T shirts! ![]() Then they headed off on the banana boat, we did a girls sedate trip first, i went along to show them the ropes ![]() ![]() After fingers up noses and enough salt water drank, the girls gave up and handed on over to the kids, who kept going till dinner! Movie evening tonight and with all this lightening and rain, sounds like a good plan! A hectic day!
No internet last night, so no blog, we are back up and running again today so here we are!
Yesterday morning, every one was quite perky, they were all in bed at 10:30 the night before so I guess it was all that sleep! We started the morning with a snorkel on Cistern Point, always a good one, big barracudas and fish we had to look up! A sail took us over to the Baths, the guys spent ages exploring over there, till hunger drove them back to the boat. A fast sail took us then down to Mountain Point where we spent the afternoon, snorkeling and investigating the moon pool, ![]() Rich found a rock jump, the boys have been looking for one all week, trust Rich to find one! ![]() Dad had a go too! ![]() ![]() Looks like Rich is doing yoga here ![]() It was then out with the banana boat, whose the guest on the back, looks familiar! ![]() Looks like B causing mayhem! ![]() ![]() It all ended in the usual way, getting wet! ![]() Every one elsed watched the mayhem and the scenery! ![]() After dinner every one headed into Saba and Bitter End to check it out, very quiet at this time of year but they all had a good time, me and Rich sat at the back of the boat fishing for tarpon, there must have been 12 and they were big, we also had a tiny shark keep swimming past on the surface, sea gulls fishing with us and a few sea wasps too, something to watch out for! As Kerry mentioned we do indeed have a bit of weather, we have done well to avoid rain and have had mostly sunshine, but this morning when every one hopped in the dingy to go to Bitter end, just as the boat set off it rained all over them! within 2 minutes it was back to blazing sunshine!
