Tuesday, June 24. 2008Promenade offers new service options! Sleep aboard option the evening before charter!
This has been something that I have been mulling over for quite awhile, and I have some more things coming down the line that I am very excited about with Promenade, but they are not quite ready for human consumption yet!
I have had so many people tell me that they want to get off the plane and straight on the boat. Plus, in season, many hotels are full or looking for a three night minimum, not to mention the weird arrival times of airplanes. If, your arrival is after 9:00 PM at night, we can also arrange a tray of sandwiches or cheese and crackers, for a minimum price ( must be ordered in advance!) as the only thing that is going to be open for anyone who is hungry is the chicken van or the grocery store! Now, us who live on the island, love the late night chicken van, but also admit, it usually only follows after a greater amount of alcohol then you are likely to be served on your flights down to Tortola by American Airlines! This below is quoted from my website. On availability, Promenade is pleased to offer the following for your convenience. Upon arrival either by ferry or plane, you can taxi straight to the yacht in the marina. We offer you your beds for the night, access to the drinking water, coffee and tea, as well as full air conditioning as required. Besides a short talk about how the lights and heads work, we provide no services, and you can make your choice for your evening meal or breakfast at any of the restaurants on island, before beginning your charter at 11:00 AM! We hope that by offering this we help make your trip easier! Our flat rate is $800.00 (non commissionable, booked and paid in advance) ![]() We am happy to work with you on all aspects, our goal is to make your vacation as stress free as we possibly can. With the ever decreasing amount of luggage that you are allowed to bring on flights, why bother bringing SCUBA gear down with you? Ours is all NEW! The one exception to this is a mask and snorkel that you are comfortable with. Don't bother lugging shampoo, body wash etc. We have it all! Please understand that this DOES not include any other crew services other then what is mentioned above, as we are usually on a 24 hour turnaround and that is the only time we have available for emergency maintenance, or the crew going out themselves! We will limit the amount of these that we do, but it is one way that we can help! Monday, June 23. 2008Dodging the weather, having some fun!
We have done well today, we have avoided nearly every bit of rain, we have had a few spots, but nothing major! Although as I type tonight it is raining, lightning and thundering! We are all having seafood and wine with the blinds down, so who cares!
Our group have had another busy day, most headed into Bitter end for a day time visit, it did spot of rain on them on the way over!! Once back, we visited Levrick Bay, most headed in there too, ![]() On the way past mosquito we saw a flotilla all rafted up, made us miss our old job Kerry!! ![]() It was then on over to the Dogs for a lunch time snorkel and a dive for Bryan, who did the best job ever! Here he is all poised for action! ![]() As we pulled into Muskmelon Bay it was cocktail hour, a cocktail game had been mentioned so I figured it was a good time to Bushwaker them, they did well, we had a 6 way tie, I had to give it to 2 of them in the end, here they are showing off their prize T shirts! ![]() Then they headed off on the banana boat, we did a girls sedate trip first, i went along to show them the ropes ![]() ![]() After fingers up noses and enough salt water drank, the girls gave up and handed on over to the kids, who kept going till dinner! Movie evening tonight and with all this lightening and rain, sounds like a good plan! A hectic day!
No internet last night, so no blog, we are back up and running again today so here we are!
Yesterday morning, every one was quite perky, they were all in bed at 10:30 the night before so I guess it was all that sleep! We started the morning with a snorkel on Cistern Point, always a good one, big barracudas and fish we had to look up! A sail took us over to the Baths, the guys spent ages exploring over there, till hunger drove them back to the boat. A fast sail took us then down to Mountain Point where we spent the afternoon, snorkeling and investigating the moon pool, ![]() Rich found a rock jump, the boys have been looking for one all week, trust Rich to find one! ![]() Dad had a go too! ![]() ![]() Looks like Rich is doing yoga here ![]() It was then out with the banana boat, whose the guest on the back, looks familiar! ![]() Looks like B causing mayhem! ![]() ![]() It all ended in the usual way, getting wet! ![]() Every one elsed watched the mayhem and the scenery! ![]() After dinner every one headed into Saba and Bitter End to check it out, very quiet at this time of year but they all had a good time, me and Rich sat at the back of the boat fishing for tarpon, there must have been 12 and they were big, we also had a tiny shark keep swimming past on the surface, sea gulls fishing with us and a few sea wasps too, something to watch out for! As Kerry mentioned we do indeed have a bit of weather, we have done well to avoid rain and have had mostly sunshine, but this morning when every one hopped in the dingy to go to Bitter end, just as the boat set off it rained all over them! within 2 minutes it was back to blazing sunshine! Oceanwide Yacht Charter Group
Ok, an entry by me that will probably get me in trouble one more time with those in the industry who think that "dirty laundry should never be aired"
Knowledge is power! We had a talk with the charismatic gentlemen who ran this particular charter group in the fall about his program. It had been touted as the be all and end all for the charter yacht industry. By putting in another middleman into the charter yacht equation and charging much less then everyone else did, he was supposed to revolutionalize the market. Bazza and I listened to the spiel and thought there was not a chance in hell that it would work. They were going to represent boats, "physically take possession of them", have the owners put a certain amount into the kitty every year for maintenance and insurance, and the middleman would take care of everything else. Staffing the boats, provisioning the boats, handling the office work, and on and on. We of course asked how he would be able to do all this, as we were curious after owning a boat here for so long and make any money. He went on about the having an inventory of SCUBA gear etc that would be kept at the office, and at the beginning of each charter just what would be needed for that week would be put on, same with the liquor and drinks, but then it would all be inventoried and taken off at the end of the week as well. That seemed to us a lot more work then worth it, to drag all that heavy stuff back and forth to a central location! That he had a pool of staff to draw on, and that the provisioning would all be done in Cost U less on St Thomas where it was cheaper and they could buy in bulk. We asked how they could do that as ten minutes before that he was telling me they were taking the fleet up to East End Tortola to "save costs" on operating. I have lived here a long time and NEVER heard of anyone moving to the BVI to "save costs" after just being told that one of the ways he was saving costs was by buying everything at Cost U less in St Thomas! He went on about having a mechanic to keep all the boats working (Bear in mind, we had seen the boats, some of them were crap! But yes, cheap crap!!) The one thing I will say about the guy, was he was Irish, and boy did he talk a good story. He must have, he convinced about 14 different boats to sign up with him! Some of them, were and are very good yachts too interspersed among the garbage. I will not say more about that, as these boats and managers and owners and his poor staff really had to scramble when he left town one Monday in May "one step in front of the sheriff" as some one put it. I liked that phrase. Many of the boats had committed charters on them at that time and at least 4 of the boats were not suitable to go out on charter! I heard the story about one of the boats that had their diesel tanks broke, so they put jerry cans on the back decks for diesel and a hose running to the engine or something and just switched the hoses back and forth for months between the jerry cans!!! Oh, dear god! So, I will let you follow these links here are read more on your own.....It is an interesting horror story and probably needs to go into a book along with other stories I have one day! A quote from his former website "Our company is known for offering excellent vacation value. Our “All Inclusive Packages” are just that -- All Inclusive. You don’t pay for port fees, park fees, scuba diving, water sports equipment rentals, etc. All inclusive also means you receive a professionally staffed yacht. Your menus are designed with your preferences foremost in our mind and expertly prepared by your private chef. Watch out for hidden "add-on’s" charged by others groups." Go here for Oceanwide Lawsuit and go here... And for those who think we should never talk about anything negative in this industry, you will have one more reason to throw stones at me (although I think they would have a lot better things to do then read my blog!) It is kind of like the David Vann and the Tin Can/ Bird of Paradise Story, too hard to look away. Don't forget to look at the pictures in the links! Wow! They are having some REALLY shitty weather in the BVI this week! Wind surge coming through tomorrow around 35 knots and East swells and thunderstorms. It might be a good day to STAY put and I certainly think the crew will NOT be out sailing the spinnaker for fun and games! ***Edited by Kerry the next morning. I was just told this boat is still in charter. I assumed after reading all of this stuff there was not a chance in hell that they were still in charter. So, iT IS possible that this boat has been cleaned up and put in much better shape then it was in at Xmas!!! I have not seen it. I decided to leave this post up, as whenever anyone is looking at that particular boat and google it the info I linked to here is going to come up in the search engines anyways. If it was me and my boat, I would want to be aware of all this and be putting up new pictures and saying what I have done to it in between, so I will leave this post for now as I know that I do not want to be associated in the same industry as what that charter guest went through. It is ENTIRELY POSSIBLE that the owners knew nothing about the shape the boat was in, as remember I said they physically turn the boat over to Oceanwide to "maintain" and "manage" and "put the crew on". That could have been Promenade if we did something like that and went away!!!! We threw a rod personally on the engine of the tender on charter yesterday, which means they are scrambling to find/buy/rent something today. Things do happen! Funny as we had talked just last week with the crew about replacing it this fall. It gets used so heavy for pull toys, and lets face it, our second little dinghy with the 15 hp is not going to pull the banana boat! Of course they have to try and manoeuver all this in some of the worst weather of the year down there! ******* Friday, June 20. 2008A new group arrive!
We picked up our new group this morning, as soon as we went to fetch them it began to rain, thankfully it was one of those short caribbean rains and by the time you get the blinds down in the cockpit its time to put them up again!
So here they are arriving ![]() Once the rain and wind had gone past, we headed on out to Little Harbour, on the way over we saw the Royal Navy ship RFA Wave Ruler, a British Naval ship here for a few days to join in celebrations of the Queens Birthday! ![]() Once we got to Little Harbour we had a busy afternoon, snorkeling, kayaking and out came the predator too ![]() ![]() The wakeboard and ski's also came out, heres dad showing off ![]() Some enjoyed the view and a cocktail ![]() I even had a quick water ski, the water was too flat to not to! Here they are at their first night dinner ![]() The fishing rods are out, Irish coffees being drank, what more could you ask for! Thursday, June 19. 2008A day in between charters!
