April 26 re: algae bloom in BVI.
I live in St. Thomas, USVI, just a few miles from the BVI, and scuba dive every weekend when conditions warrant. Two weeks ago the underwater visibility was excellent both north and south of St. Thomas. Last weekend the visibility was very poor south with the water an almost greenish color but the vis north was still very good (80 feet plus). I dove yesterday and the visibility was simply terrible north and south, 10 to 20 feet max. I've lived here 20 years and this is the worst I've seen except when a storm comes through and stirs things up. We certainly get algae blooms here from time to time but nothing like this. Hopefully it will dissipate soon and not damage our reefs. We'll see.
I sure agree with you, we will see! The viz on the Rhone, was MUCh worse this Saturday then it was a week or so ago as well, so we are seeing the same thing. Did notice the greenish cast still coming down from the BVI to Charlotte Amalie today all the way as well, the water looks so dark!
We're coming to St. John in a couple weeks. Hoping the algae is gone by then. How's it looking now?
Not cleared up yet, but Looking a bit better today from last week, maybe 25% better.
